From early dykes, polders and windmills to more modern feats of engineering, the Dutch have successfully devised numerous ways to hold back the water, but few are quite so beautiful as the Dutch dunes. A wonder of man-made nature, the dune landscapes created to reserve the North Sea coast not only keep the sea at bay but are also a delight of natural preservation, ripe with national park lands. One of the areas of international importance for which the Netherlands has a special responsibility is the strip of coastal dunes. Almost all the Dutch dunes are part of the Natura 2000 network. The Dutch dunes have been protected for a long time because of their importance for flood protection along the coast. Walking, hiking and cycling are perhaps the best ways to fully enjoy the peace and calm of the sheltered, centuries-old woodland parks that beautify the Dutch coastal dunes.
The coastal line of the Netherlands is comprised of one big finely grained white sandy beach, stretching hundreds of kilometres from the Wadden Islands in the North al the way down to Zeeland in the South. Behind the beaches lie beautiful sand dunes, needed to protect against floods.

Daarmee is het zo’n 20 kilometer lang en 2,5 km breed, met een oppervlakte van 5300 hectare. In dit prachtige gebied komen veel plant- en diersoorten voor. Dit heeft alles te maken met de uitgestrektheid en afwisselende begroeiing van het gebied. Ook de hoogte, vochtigheid, kalkgehalte en het menselijk gebruik in het verleden hebben gezorgd voor een grote verscheidenheid aan soorten. In de 21ste eeuw is het duin belangrijk voor de mens als zeewering en als gebied voor natuur, recreatie en waterwinning.

The most photographed resort on Menorca, Cala Santa Galdana enjoys a splendid picturesque situation on a horseshoe bay with a backdrop of steep densely wooded limestone cliffs. A river divides the resort in half, continuing inland where it flows through the beautiful Algendar Gorge. The resort itself is purpose-built, low key and low rise. Most properties either blend into the hillside or run along the river. Cala Galdana's beautiful gently shelving white sand beach is backed by shady pine trees and reached by a wooden bridge or steps which make it seem more secluded than it really is. In fact, it becomes very crowded in season but four of the island's most idyllic sandy cove beaches, Mitjana, Turqueta, Macarella and Trébaluger, are all either within walking distance the nearest, Cala Mitjana, is 30 minutes or just a short boat ride away. There are a number of watersports on offer at Cala Galdana, fewer if any at the other beaches. Walking, mountain biking and sea-kayaking all make the most of Cala Galdana's attractive natural surroundings. The immediate area has protected natural park status and is perfect for rambling outside the hot summer season. Cliff-top walks and sea kayak excursions to adjacent beaches are also popular.
We explore some unique scenic landscapes on foot on the South West tip of the Menorca island - Spain. We hike along along the coast line and discover miles of untouched beaches and blue turquiose water that one just can't resist. The island is very clean, and has been granted the title of Reserva de la Biosfera (a UNESCO award), a biosphere with special environmental qualities and privileges. Gala Santa Galdana is de koningin der baaien en ontleent haar naam aan het Arabische woord voor de plaatselijke rivier – feitelijk bestaat er geen heilige Galdana. De baai is een weidse boog gouden zand, begrensd door beboste kliffen en een smaragdgroene zee. De baai heeft een uniek microklimaat met hogere temperaturen en zachtere wind dan de omliggende calas. De Barrance d'Algendar mondt hier uit in zee. De monding is verbreed om plaats te bieden aan een jachthaven voor kleine boten. Een voetgangersbrug over het stroompje leidt naar een rotsachtige verhoging, bijna een eiland, en een spectaculair gelegen restaurant waar u vanaf het terras direct uitkijkt over zee. Voor de beste uitzichten over de gehele baai volgt u de borden naar Mirador de Sa Punta op de oostelijke kliffen, dicht bij het startpunt van de wandeltocht naar Cala Mitjana. U kunt hier ook naartoe klimmen vanaf de trappen aan de oostzijde van het strand. Dit een goede basis voor wandeltochten door een ravijn of naar de rustiger stranden die in beide richtingen langs de kust liggen. Tijdens het hoogseizoen is het er ideaal voor gezinsvakanties – vermaak en voorzieningen voor kinderen, veilig zwemmen en schaduwrijke wandeltochten voor volwassenen. U kunt surfplanken, snorkelspullen, waterfietsen en motorboten huren, leren zeilen, duiken, of een boottocht maken langs de kust voor een picknick in een baai.
