NEMO, the large green building, is the largest science center in the Netherlands. It is located in Amsterdam. The architecture is by Renzo Piano. The (Dutch East India Company) VOC ship Amsterdam ran aground near Hastings, England on January 1749, on her maiden voyage to Batavia. A replica seen in front of the NEMO. The Nederlands scheepvaartmuseum (Netherlands Maritime Museum) the large building to the right. The museum is housed in a former naval storehouse, 's Lands Zeemagazijn or Admiraliteits Magazijn, constructed in 1656.

NEMOis sinds 2000 de naam van een science center in de Nederlandse hoofdstad Amsterdam. Het is gebouwd op de fundamenten van de IJtunnel en gelegen aan het Oosterdok. Het gebouw uit 1997, dichtbij het Centraal Station van Amsterdam, is ontworpen door Renzo Piano. Het gebouw lijkt de vorm van een schip te hebben, maar zo is het niet bedoeld: de vorm stelt de ingang van de IJtunnel voor, gespiegeld ten opzichte van de grond. Replica van de Amsterdam VOC schip voor Science Center NEMO. Begin 1749, tijdens de eerste reis, ging de Amsterdam verloren door een storm. Het schip bevatte een kostbare lading en werd daarom het doelwit van schatzoekers. Het Nederlands Scheepvaartmuseum achter het NEMO heeft één van de belangrijkste collecties voorwerpen met betrekking tot de geschiedenis van de scheepvaart.

SAIL AMSTERDAM is a large maritime manifestation held every five years in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Tall ships from all over the world visit the city to moor in its Eastern harbour, and people can then visit the ships for four days free of charge. The event was organised for the first time in 1975 to celebrate the 700th anniversary of Amsterdam, under the name Sail Amsterdam 700. Sail is one of the largest maritime manifestations in the world, and the largest event of any kind in the Netherlands. Tens of tall ships and hundreds of other historical ships are involved. Numerous other ships and boats are present besides the participating ships, amounting to more than 10,000 boats. The event attracts around 2 million visitors. The amount of tall ships vary from 50 to 100 (those with at least 3 masts). Other historical ships number around 600. There were also several ship replicas, hundreds of classical sail- and steamships and some modern marine ships. The tall ships were moored in the IJ harbour and in Amsterdam North (across 't IJ) and in the Oosterdok nearby, where one can also find the Dutch Maritime museum with its replica of a Dutch East India Company VOC ship. On the first day, the ships gather in the sluice of IJmuiden for the Sail In or Parade of Sail through the North Sea Canal to Amsterdam, led by the event's flagship the Clipper Stad Amsterdam accompanied with the Dutch crown prince Willem Alexander. Amsterdam's harbour is known to be very shallow a centuries old problem and the Stad Amsterdam is a 'deep' ship. But luckily the ground is also very soggy, so there is not likely to have been any damage. Every day during SAIL, there will be all kinds of activities at various locations which are free to the public. In other words, SAIL is one big celebration for everyone and you don’t even need to be a boat lover or water sports enthusiast! Every day ends with fireworks shows on the water.

Dat gebeurde door kanonniers die waren gekleed in 17e-eeuwse kleding. Vanaf de kop van de Sixhaven vuurden zij met kanonnen een aantal saluutschoten af. Sail is nu het grootste publieksevenement van Nederland. Sail Amsterdam heeft zaterdag een megadrukke dag beleefd. Bijna 500.000 bezoekers kwamen op het scheepvaartevenement af. Een van de redenen van de drukte was dat het zaterdag weekend was, en ook nog eens het laatste van de zomervakantie in de Amsterdam. Op het water zag het zwart van de pleziervaarders. Veel mensen kwamen met een bootje naar Sail, dat op en rond het IJ plaatsvindt. Ze kwamen terecht in een lange botenfile. Zangeres Ellen ten Damme sluit deze derde dag van Sail af met onder meer het nieuwe havenlied van Amsterdam. The Magere Brug ("Skinny Bridge") is a bridge over the river Amstel in the city centre of Amsterdam. The Magere Brug is a bascule bridge made of white painted wood. It was built in 1670 and broadened in 1871. The last major renovation was done in 1969. Since 2003, only pedestrians and cyclists are allowed to use the bridge. Many times a day it is opened in order to let ships pass; the boats used for sightseeing tours are low enough to pass underneath the bridge when closed. The bridge is decorated with 1200 light bulbs that are turned on in the evening.

De Magere Brug is een brug over de rivier de Amstel in het centrum van Amsterdam.
De Magere Brug is een ophaalbrug van wit geschilderd hout, gebouwd in 1670 en opnieuw gebouwd in 1871 omdat hij te mager (smal) was. De laatste grote renovatie dateert van 1969. Tot 1994 werd de brug handmatig door de twee brugwachters geopend en gesloten. Tot 2003 reed er autoverkeer overheen; na een reparatie en herinrichting gebruiken tegenwoordig alleen fietsers en voetgangers de brug. Enkele keren per dag wordt hij opgehaald om schepen te laten passeren; de rondvaartboten kunnen eronderdoor als hij dicht is. De brug is gedecoreerd met 1200 gloeilampjes, die 's avonds aan gaan.

Amsterdam is the capital of the Netherlands. The name is a derivative from Amstel dam pointing to the city's origin: a dam in the river Amstel. The city is known for its historic port, the Rijksmuseum, the red-light district (de Wallen), the liberal coffeeshops, and the canals which have led to Amsterdam being termed the "Venice of the North".

Finally back home after visiting Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Monaco, Italy and Luxembourg.

De belangrijkste toeristische trekpleisters van Nederland zijn in Amsterdam te vinden. Zo was in 2006 een tocht per rondvaartboot door de Amsterdamse grachtengordel met 3,1 miljoen bezoekers de meest bezochte attractie van Nederland (de Efteling was de tweede met 3,0 miljoen), het Van Gogh Museum is met 1,7 miljoen derde op deze lijst. Ook het Rijksmuseum en het Anne Frankhuis behoren tot de drukstbezochte attracties. Onder de toeristen zijn voorts de vele andere musea, de coffeeshops, de restaurants en de raamprostitutie op de Wallen ('Red Light District') populair.
