Eilean Donan, Scottish Gaelic for Island of Donan, is a small island in Loch Duich in the western Highlands of Scotland. It is connected to the mainland by a footbridge and lies about half a mile from the village of Dornie. Eilean Donan is named after St Donan, a Celtic saint martyred in the Dark Ages. The original castle was built in 1220 for Alexander II as a defence against the Vikings. This century it has become one of Scotland most photographed castles thanks to its picturesque setting on an islet in Loch Duich by the main road to the Isle of Skye. In 1984 it featured in the movie Highlander with Christopher Lambert and Sean Connery.
We just got back from our holiday from Scotland. Despite the rain, rain and rain we had a great holiday. We visit the two cities Edinburgh, Glasgow and went hiking in the Highlands of Scotland on the beautiful isle of Skye. We all go soaking wet everyday but our fireplace at our cottage and Scottish Whiskey kept me warm. Many new photos but have to finish my photo book too ;-) Above photo taken on our way the Isle of Skye. The famous Eilean Donan castle captured just before the start of heavy rain fall.

Seals, both Common and Grey can be seen around the coastline of the Highlands and Islands – on a wet walk they are guaranteed to raise spirits. We took a 2 hour walk onto the little visited Fiadhairt peninsula, the south shores of which are the best place in Skye for seeing seals close up. These shores are much favoured by the Loch Dunvegan common seal colony, which is the largest on Skye. A walk in the rain across the soaking wet grassy moorland with faint sheep tracks. See this map for details. The seals can often be seen basking on the rocks where seaweed filled inlets either on shore or just out in the sea. Approach very quietly, taking care not to disturb the seals too much. There are usually many of them swimming in the water; when in the water, the seals are much more confident and often swim quite close, seemingly as inquisitive as their human visitors.

Highland cattle or kyloe are an ancient Scottish breed of beef cattle with long horns and long wavy pelts which are coloured black, brindled, red, yellow or dun. The breed was developed in the Scottish Highlands and western isles of Scotland. Breeding stock has been exported to the rest of the world. The breed was developed from two sets of stock, one originally black, and the other reddish. They both graze and browse and eat plants other cattle avoid. Highland cattle have been successfully established in many temperate countries. Their hair provides protection during the cold winters and their skill in browsing for food enables them to survive like here on the Isle of Skye at the start of our classic hill-walk to the Quiraing.

The spectacular Quiraing on the Isle of Skye gives us a classic hill-walk. This circuit heads out above the escarpment and returns along its base. A beautiful hill-walk of 4 hours at the Trotternish. After a hour of climbing the path leads to the edge of the cliffs above the Quiraing. These two climbers head off left and climb steeply up the grassy hillside. The slope briefly relents by a grass-grown drystone dyke. This soon leads to the edge of the cliffs above the Quiraing, with spectacular views looking down. The outlook across the sea and Staffin Bay to the Torridon mountains is equally magnificent. Please have a look at the map. Despite the rain we continued walking.

The spectacular Quiraing on the Isle of Skye gives us a classic hill-walk. This circuit heads out above the escarpment and returns along its base. A beautiful hill-walk of 4 hours at the Trotternish which started fine but soon it started to rain and didn't stop. Great views but hard to keep your lens dry. After a hour of climbing the path leads to the edge of the cliffs above the Quiraing, with spectacular views looking down on the flat area and grassy hillside below. You'll probably see tiny white sheeps figures wandering around – much better to look down on it from here! The outlook across Loch Leum na Luirginn and Loch Cleat to the Bioda Buidhe mountain is equally magnificent. Please have a look at the map. Despite the rain we continued walking.
