Banana tree flowers come in many different shapes, colours and sizes depending on which species and variant you chose. The Banana ornata 'Bronze' like photo above or "Tropical Sunset Banana" will produce yellow, orange or bronze flowers with an erect inflorescence that sports purple to lilac bracts with yellow tips. In tropical parts of the world, the banana tree flower from certain banana species is an appreciated food. Bananas have become increasingly popular in homes especially homes with atriums.

My children only know banana fruits from the Supermarket and were surprised to see them hanging in such large clusters.

Deze Musa Ornata produceert al vrij snel jonge plantjes uit de rhizoomscheuten rondom de hoofdstam. Deze banaan heeft opgerichte bloeistengels met gele bloemen die uit roze schutbladeren steken en is ongeveer 3 meter hoog. Een bananenplant of bananenboom is in werkelijkheid een kruid, `s werelds grootste kruid. Volgens de tuinbouwkundige definitie wordt de banaan echter tot de groenten gerekend. Volgens de culinaire definitie is het echter een vrucht, omdat de banaan als nagerecht dan wel als tussendoortje wordt gegeten.

100 years ago there were at least 100,000 elephants in Thailand. They were a treasured resource. Now the number has dropped to under 5,000. Thai people love elephants. But other problems remain for elephants in Thailand. The forest surface has decreased a lot due to deforestation and eucalyptus plantations and now only represent 28 % of the Thailand. Shriking forests, poaching and conflicts with farmers have hit Thai elephants very hard..
With less work in the forests, less food in the forests, some mahouts bring their elephants in big cities like Bangkok. For mahouts it can be a good opportunity to earn money. Thai people and tourists have a soft spot in their hearts for the elephant. Bangkok administration has tried to chase elephants from the city since it's not allowed anymore. Elephant camps provide a place where elephant rides and performances generate enough for their food and health care. Tourism appears to be one answer with its good and bad consequences.

De Aziatische olifant is een bedreigde diersoort en beschermd door de CITES-conventie. Thaise olifanten zijn echter altijd belangrijke arbeidskrachten geweest, gebruikt in oorlogen, transport en houtkap. De houtkap is sinds 1989 officieel verboden in Thailand, waardoor veel olifanten werkloos zijn geworden. Op drie manieren is er met olifanten nog geld te verdienen: bedelen in steden, illegale houtkap en olifantenkampen met shows en trekkings. Meest schrijnend is misschien wel de situatie van de straatolifanten. Hoewel de Thaise regering gelukkig het bedelen van olifanten in de steden een aantal jaar geleden heeft verboden.

Bangkok, known in Thai as Krung Thep Maha Nakhon or Krung Thep for short, is the capital, largest urban area and primate city of Thailand. It was a small trading post at the mouth of the Chao Phraya River during the Ayutthaya Kingdom and came to the forefront of Thailand when it was given the status as the capital city in 1768 after the burning of Ayuthaya. Bangkok is the world's 22nd largest city by population with approximately registered 8,160,522 residents (July 2007), but due to large unregistered influxes of migrants from the North East of Thailand and of many nations across Asia, the population of greater Bangkok is estimated at nearly 15 million people.

Bangkok (Thai: กรุงเทพมหานคร, Krung Thep) is de hoofdstad van Thailand. Bangkok is tevens de grootste stad, met 8.160.522 geregistreerde inwoners (juni 2007), het werkelijke aantal ligt op ongeveer 15 miljoen inwoners. De stad is gevestigd op de oostelijke oever van de Menam, dicht bij de Golf van Thailand. Bangkok begon als klein handelscentrum en als haven voor Ayutthaya, dat de hoofdstad was tot het in 1767 door Birma ingenomen en verwoest werd. Bij Thonburi, aan de overkant van de rivier bij Bangkok, werd een tijdelijke hoofdstad gevestigd. In 1782 liet Koning Rama I bij de rivier een paleis bouwen op het eiland Rattanakosin. Hij maakte Bangkok tot hoofdstad, en veranderde de naam in Krung Thep. In het westen wordt echter nog altijd de oude naam van de stad gebruikt.

Buddhism in Thailand is largely of the Theravada school. Nearly 95% of Thailand's population is Buddhist of the Theravada school, though Buddhism in this country has become integrated with folk beliefs such as ancestor worship. Thai Buddhism was based on the religious movement founded in the sixth century B.C. by Siddhartha , later known as the Buddha, who urged the world to relinquish the extremes of sensuality and self-mortification and follow the enlightened Middle Way...... The focus of this religion is on man, not gods; the assumption is that life is pain or suffering, which is a consequence of craving, and that suffering can end only if desire ceases. The end of suffering is the achievement of nirvana often defined as the absence of craving and therefore of suffering, sometimes as enlightenment.
Like in most other Theravada nations, Buddhism in Thailand is represented primarily by the presence of Buddhist monks, who serve as officiants on ceremonial occasions, as well as being responsible for preserving and conveying the teachings of the Buddha.

Het overgrote deel van de Thaise bevolking, zo’n 90% à 95% is boeddhist. Men hangt het zogenaamde Teravada-boeddhisme. In het Theravada wordt meditatie benadrukt als een essentieel onderdeel van het pad naar verlichting, samen met moreel gedrag en wijsheid. Het brengen van een einde aan het lijden is het hoofddoel van het Theravada boeddhisme. De Boeddha legde verder een zeer gedetailleerde gedragscode voor de Monniken neer: de Vinaya. Over het algemeen worden monniken door de Boeddha aangemoedigd om wereldse aangelegenheden en passies achter zich te laten, zodat zij gemakkelijker in staat zijn een staat van vrede en wijsheid te bereiken, en sterke ongezonde emoties zoals haat, verlangen en lust te overwinnen. Een Monnik zoals hierboven in z'n oranje gewaad, kaalgeschoren en met sandalen aan de voeten is niet meer weg te denken uit het straatbeeld van Thailand.
Er wordt van iedere jongeman verwacht, dat zij een poosje (van een week tot enkele maanden) als monnik leven. Zo tussen hun schooltijd en hun werkende leven in. Het wordt beschouwd als een overgangsrite en zij verwerven op die wijze aanzien voor zichzelf en hun familie.

The Similan Islands (Thai: เกาะสิมิลัน) is a group of islands in the Andaman Sea off the coast of Phang Nga Province, southern Thailand. It is a national park which was established in 1982. Since no tourist hotels are allowed in this national park it's still unspoiled as it should be :)

Similan Islands National Park was established after the one-year exploration by the Foresty department. The park is the archipelago consisting of nine islands which are Ko Bon, Ko Bayu, Ko Similan, Ko Payu, Ko Miang (two adjoining islands), Ko Payan, Ko Payang, and Ko Huyong. Recently, the park was expanded to included two remoted islands which are Ko Bon and Ko Tachai. The Similans are situated 70 kilometres from Phang Nga town.
