If you love the outdoors you can enjoy cycling, hiking and sailing in the area of Warmond. It is in the middle of spring and the breeding season has begun. Today was a warm spring day about 20 degrees celcius. Brooding of this swan family has run successfully. The nest is on the ground here on the banks of the Zijldijk near the Kagerplassen.
Swans are monogamous; they usually mate for life. The number of eggs in each clutch ranges from three to eight. The lifespan of the swan is average 20 years, The male helps with the nest construction and aid in incubating the eggs. An incubation period of 30 to 40 days. Swans are known to aggressively protect their nests. Swans feed in the water and on land. They are almost entirely herbivorous, although they may eat small amounts of aquatic animals. In the water food is obtained by up-ending or dabbling, and their diet is composed of the roots, tubers, stems and leaves of aquatic and submerged plants. They use their long handy neck. The nest lings have a gray or brown down coat and a relatively short neck. A few hours after hatching, they can walk and swim. For several months, the young are kept warm and monitored by both parents. Find food they do themselves. After the winter, the
young swans are driven from the territory to make a new nest themselves. In winter they live in troops.

Als je van het buitenleven houdt kunt u in de omgeving van
Warmond heerlijk fietsen, wandelen en varen. Het is volop lente en het broedseizoen is begonnen. Het was vandaag een warme lentedag zo'n 20 graden. Het broeden van deze zwaan familie is succesvol gelopen. Het nest bevindt zich hier op de grond op de oever van de Zijldijk bij de Kagerplassen.
Zwanen zijn monogaam; een paar blijft hun hele leven bij elkaar. Het vrouwtje broedt zo'n 30 tot 40 dagen. gemiddeld zes eieren uit. Ondertussen houdt het mannetje de wacht. Bij het verdedigen van hun broedsel kunnen mannetjes behoorlijk agressief zijn. Hierbij schuwen ze het ook niet om mensen die te dichtbij komen aan te vliegen. De taak van het mannetje houdt niet op bij het bewaken van het broedende vrouwtje: bij sommige soorten helpt het mannetje ook met het uitbroeden van de eieren. Het voedsel bestaat meestal uit waterplanten, die gezocht worden in ondiep water. Hierbij komt hun lange hals goed van pas. Bij gebrek aan planten eet een zwaan ook wel kleine vissen. De
nestjongen hebben nog een grijze of bruine donsvacht en een relatief korte hals. Al een paar uur na het uitkomen, kunnen ze lopen en zwemmen. Het zijn dus nestvlieders. Gedurende enkele maanden worden de jongen door beide ouders warm gehouden en bewaakt. Voedsel zoeken doen ze zelf. Na de winter worden de jongen uit het territorium verjaagd door de ouders, vóórdat ze een nieuw nest maken. Een zwaan leeft in het wild ongeveer 20 jaar. 's Winters leven ze in troepen.
