The Conestoga River joins the Grand here, just east of the village of Conestogo.
Why the inconsistent spelling, you may wonder? The river was named after a similar stream in Pennsylvania, by some young men prospecting for farmland in 1806. Unfortunately, the name of the village was modifed by a postmaster--they had a lot of authority in pioneer times! The modified spelling has been applied to the river--incorrectly in my view--by government agencies. Popular opinion and usage continues to favour the original spelling, however, as a quick check of the phonebook will demonstrate.

The not-very-busy spur line, from Kitchener to Elmira, passes over the mill race and the Conestoga River. A freight train creeps across the old bridge most evenings during the work week. The minute-long time exposure, however, gives a completely false impression of speed. The odd streaks in the sky are due to insects being caught briefly in the powerful headlight of the locomotive.

Most of the time, I try to stay within the bounds of conventional photographic realism. Just barely within perhaps, but I really do try to avoid that 'over-cooked' look that takes no effort or imagination to apply, and is everywhere these days. I detest applications that turn boring snapshots into instant 'art' with just one click of a magic button. They are made even more boring.
But sometimes, (and I do mean rarely) photos seem to look better when pushed hard. That seems to be the case here. I'm not quite sure why, but this particular scene responded in a rather painterly way that I, at least, find pleasing and appropriate to the subject.

On a warm summer evening, a fog starts to develop in low-lying areas. The rank vegetation is heavy with dew, and walking through it would not be pleasant. However, a mowed path, carefully maintained for the benefit of the community, makes this section of the river readily accessible.

Sometimes all the elements just happen to occur together. But to get everything to appear as the eye sees it requires some effort. This is a sandwich of 7 individual exposures, in order to get the dynamic range of the scene under control. I prefer to do this through post processing rather than messing with graduated filters.
