Even photographers get lucky sometimes. The right place... the right time. A cold snap and the season's first snowfall, together with a brilliant sunset. And then an old sugar maple, weakened by disease and woodpecker holes, suddenly snaps in the intense cold...
Ha! A likely story! The truth is, this is a vertical panorama that failed to stitch properly. I captured the images a few years ago, but was unable to handle the stitching or the contrast with the software I was using at the time. On trying it again today, the distortion of the ultra-wide-angle lens was still too much even for Microsoft ICE to fully resolve. Although the program nicely handled most of the image, the convergence of the trees overhead caused this surprisingly clean and fortuitous break. Needless to say, I immediately gave up on 'Plan A'. Yes Virginia, even photographers catch lucky breaks sometimes!
