Milky Way over water pump wiindmill and watering tanks. This is a working ranch in central Utah. The bright orange "star" is Mars —very close and bright at this time of its 2-year cycle.

June 2, 12:56 am: A few minutes after I took this photo, the wind picked up and started pumping water. A lone coyote howled in the background; and thin clouds began to roll in, reflecting orange light from a small central Utah town, nestled behind the distant mountain. According to The new world atlas of artificial night sky brightness, 99% of of U.S. and European populations live under light-polluted skies; and 80% of North Americans cannot see the Milky Way.

I love light, but there are better ways to light our way. Check out my mini-documentary, Dark Skies.

Shooting this reminds me of the 4th verse of the song Home on the Range:

How often at night when the heavens are bright,
With the light of the twinkling stars,
Have I stood there amazed and asked as I gazed,
If their glory exceeds that of ours.
— Dr. Brewster Higley - 1876

(No one ever sings this verse. Most of only know the first verse, "Oh, give me a home where the buffalo roam" and the chorus, "Home, home on the range, Where the deer and the antelope play;")

My new ebook, Milky Way NightScapes, gives extensive details on my style of starry night landscape photography. Four chapters cover planning, scouting, forecasting star/landscape alignment, light painting, shooting techniques and post processing.
