The input side of a very old NP231 transfer case.
It looked fairly fresh on this side, I think it had been rebuilt at some point. But it did puke out some red fluid, so I suspect the seals are at least partly done for.
I'll set this old guy aside as a spare. They're not exactly uncommon but they're not exactly easy or cheap to acquire either.

Or some day I might want to rebuild an NP231 myself. You can get an upgraded, wider chain for these things, and even lower the gear ratio while you're at it. More ideas for that "maybe someday but probably not" pile.

After three and a half decades of service, the Peugot BA10/5 was removed from beneath the truck for a ride back home in the bed.
Here my son is rigging it for a lift.

We sat it down and removed the old NP231 transfer case, which is definitely the most valuable part of this assembly.

The fork on the transfer case they sent me did not mate to the front driveshaft, so the shop swapped the yokes between the old and new ones, which is why the "old" yoke looks shiny and new (because it is).

The truck does shift much better now with the shiny new Aisin unit beneath it.
