Shooting stars can be very colorful. While the human eye generally cannot discern many colors, cameras can do so more often. The colors of shooting stars usually come from ionized chemical elements released when the meteoroid disintegrates. Blue-green comes from magnesium, calcium radiates purple, and nickel glows green. Red, on the other hand, generally comes from ionized nitrogen and oxygen in the Earth's atmosphere.
