In spite of the complete, or nearly complete absence of snow visible in the couple of other photos in this album from a late March day trip to Yellowstone, at some higher elevations there was still appreciable snow pack. This fox, that appeared to me to be quite large for its species, though it's also got a very full winter coat that might give that impression, was along the roadside where the bridge at Lower Barronette ski pullout crosses Soda Butte Creek. It posed briefly for the very small assemblage of photographers, then changed direction and disappeared back into the thick forest along the creek. That provided us with a great look at its busy, snowy tail.

All that's left after winter is the dregs. Somehow the bighorn sheep are nonetheless sustained by it. These guys came through winter in pretty good shape, in part because there was very little snowfall so it wasn't very hard for them to access said dried up "dregs." Tough animals, they are!

Just outside of Yellowstone's northern border US highway 89 passes through Yankee Jim Canyon (carved by the Yellowstone River a few eons ago) where one often screeches to a halt to watch the bighorn sheep that hang out there. This day there were a few rams on the high wall looking for a little straw to nibble. There was very little snow at all in the area this entire winter, and at this spot, the ground has turned to dust.

I especially enjoyed this shot because of the huge beautiful boulder ensconced up slope that nearly eclipsed the ram for my attention.
