I admit I didn't plan this image with the theme in mind but it seems to fit. This wild stallion looks alone but he's the stud and protector of of a herd of 12. He was constantly alert to danger - though surprisingly oblivious to us - at one point signalling the herd to flee then telling them it was safe when the threat turned out to be just a deer sauntering down the hill. He also repeatedly chased another younger stallion away from his mares. More on Alberta's wild horses here:

Wondered if this lone Wildie (Alberta's wild/feral horses) stallion had lost his herd to another stallion. The snow pack is low this year so not such a tough winter for them.
