Happy Earth Day

Fairly large, bright green parrot of humid tropical lowlands. Fairly common. Found in forest, edge, and semiopen areas with scattered tall trees and forest patches. Most often seen flying overhead early and late in the day, often fairly high and usually in pairs or loose groups made up of pairs. Best field mark is the contrasting yellow cheek patch; also note red forehead. Like other parrots in the same genus, in flight shows a red patch on the flight feathers ~ eBird

He declined to show me his fiery throat. Endemic to the highlands of Costa Rica and western Panama.

The Howler Monkeys woke us very early on our first morning in the Osa Peninsula so I headed out to the deck to enjoy the morning sounds. Couldn’t believe it when a small troop of Squirrel Monkeys descended into a tree right next to us. After they left a pair of Scarlet Macaws landed in the same tree to eat the fruit followed by a Spider Monkey band. I was DELIRIOUS with excitement. Too much lens but didn’t dare move in case I frightened any of them off, nor did I have the presence of mind to take off my teleconverter.

You can see all 4 species of Costa Rican monkeys on the Osa Peninsula.

A bird I was dying to see, and we were lucky to see a few. This one’s close to the nest where both parents were feeding chicks.
