Preston's Winckley Square is often described as the finest example of a privately planned Georgian development with open space in the North of England. The Square was named after the Winckley family by Preston attorney, William Cross who purchased Town End Field from Thomas Winckley in the 1700s. The Square was developed by Cross as an exclusive residential area with the first house (now number 7) built in 1799. The original residents of Winckley Square were professional gentlemen and wealthy manufacturers.

New heritage reference points, plaques and displays have already been placed throughout the Gardens.
