Earlier this year I was one of the beta testers for the Lomomatic 110 camera which has just been released. What sets it apart from other 110 cameras is a “B” setting and the ability to do multiple exposures. This is a triple exposure with coloured sweet wrappers (Quality Street) held in front of the lens.

Taken with a Kodak Stylelite 110 camera. There was already a film in this camera when I found it, it was on frame 12, so I decided to finish it off. I've no idea where the camera came from, but I can be sure that it had been left unused for many years. I took a few photos, but the film jammed at frame 17. I moved it into my Pentax Auto 110, but it wouldn't advance in that either. I manually freed the film and after a few frames it was loose enough to advance, leaving just 4 exposures. I finished the film and then developed it in the Fuji Hunt C41 kit. The already exposed images were poor but visible, they were probably taken 30 years ago. The remains of the film was virtually blank, but I managed to drag some images out in post processing.

In 1974, while still at school, I experimented with various techniques to produce “abstract” photographs. This example was created using Agfacontour, a technical film made to create equidensities. It has both negative and positive components, which, according to the exposure given produce black and white images of a given density. For example three separations could be made for each of the light, dark and intermediate tones.
This was a time consuming business, and the film was discontinued once it became possible to make separations digitally.
Having made the separations, I went on to add colour, giving each layer a different hue. I did this in two ways, first by making black and white negatives on lith film, and using the Tetenal toning chemicals to replace the black silver image with a dye layer. Later I used 24 x 36mm images together with a slide duplicator and added different coloured light for each layer. This was done by keeping the shutter open and working in the dark.

Following on from my decade long project in which I used a different film camera each week, 522 in total, I have relaxed the pace and set myself a monthly camera project each year. My dad was born 100 years ago in 1924, he collected old cameras and died age 91 in 2015. In this centenary year I've decided to use one of his favourite cameras each month. January's camera is the Zeiss Ikon Contarex “Bullseye”. It's a big heavy camera, and is arguably over-engineered. The exposure meter no longer works, and as I discovered, the film advance is not reliable, with overlapping frames in the second half of the film. The film is Rollei Retro 400s, developed in Rodinal 1:50 for 18 minutes at 22 degrees. Red filter.
