I have always dreamt of seeing this bird. It is the smallest bird in the world. I felt so lucky to see this bird and could not get over how truly tiny they are! They really are the size of large bees! They have blue backs, green flanks, white bellies and fuschia gorgets with hints of gold. They have long wisps to the ends of their gorgets like Costa's Hummers have. They are sadly declining rapidly due to habitat loss and loss of native plants which they depend on. Photographed at Palpite Casa de Bernabe.

Was lucky to see this endemic owl at its nest in Zapata, Playa Larga. It is an endemic owl and sounds like our Western Screech-Owls with their bouncing ball calls. In fact they used to be called Cuban Screech-Owls. They eat insects and arthropods and are strictly nocturnal. They require woodpecker cavities to make their nests.
