Late afternoon light warms up the buttes and needles along the Chesler Park trail in the Needles District of Canyonlands National Park. In the foreground you can see biocrust, the dark bumpy surface of the soil, as well as juniper and piñon pine trees and skeletons.
The biocrust is common in undisturbed soils in the Colorado Plateau and many other deserts around the world. It results from cyanobacteria (aka blue-green algae) and lichens that help stabilize the soil and lowers erosional loss. Biocrust is easily disturbed by hikers, all-terrain vehicles, and grazing cattle, and may take centuries to recover.

It's probably just me but I see a bit of a Chesney Hawkes going on here. No apologies for a one-hit wonder earworm. Enjoy!
