You may have noticed this in the background of my previous picture.The tower is a Belfry and part of the remains of St.Columba's (Colmcille) 6th century monastry on Tory Island.It is said these belfries were used by the monks as look-out posts for invaders and when threatened they would haul their religious treasures up through the high door for protection.
The Tau Cross (a t-shaped cross) is believed to date from the 12th century. It is one of only two Tau crosses in Ireland
