The most powerful symbol of Ireland's independence is the General post Office at the centre of Dublin.It was the command centre for the Irish Patriots in 1916.In front of this building Pádraig Pearse read the Proclamation of Independence.Following the 1916 Rising the 15 leaders were executed and the attitude of the Irish people was changed forever.As our Nobel Prize winning poet,William Butler Yeats expressed it,
"All changed,changed utterly,
a terrible beauty is born".
(ps. My mother worked here as a civil servant in the 1940's,but had to give up work when she married.Not much gender equality those days !)
