Pretty sure this metallic beauty from Åva-Stensjödal in Tyresta National Park (just south of Stockholm, Sweden) is a female common spreadwing (Lestes sponsa). There is however a possibility that it instead is a Robust spreadwing (Lestes dryas) - from this angle they are very similar.

Regardless of species, it is a very attractive animal, wouldn't you say?

The unusual background is just my mother's tablecloth on the patio table at her summer house in Saltarö on the Värmdö peninsula in the Stockholm inner archipelago.

The critter in the shot is, despite the black legs, a red-legged shieldbug (Pentatoma rufipes), also known as the forest bug.

The reason behind the incorrect leg colour is that this isn't an adult. As soon as it has grown enough, it will moult for the fifth and final time and turn into the adult form - which looks like this: www.flickr.com/photos/tinyturtle/49057293721/

The large tree nymph (Idea leuconoe) is a pretty large butterfly with a wingspan of up to 115 mm (4.5").

The chrysalis however is surprisingly small (and bright yellow with rows of tiny black spots) so they must be doing something special in packaging to fit inside there.

Straight out of the camera, this shot from Tyresta National Park of a female brimstone butterfly (Gonepteryx rhamni) was horribly overexposed and basically white because I had set the power on the flash way to high for such a bright subject.

Fortunately, shooting in RAW means that it is possible to dial back much of that damage and this one came out surprisingly normal with just a few faults in the edges of the former highlights.

A female Low's swallowtail (Papilio lowii), also known as the great yellow mormon and Asian swallowtail on a peace lily (Spathiphyllum wallisii).

This is from the Haga Ocean butterfly house where I've captured more than one species on these pretty flowers which are also known as white sail.

Here are two others: www.flickr.com/photos/tinyturtle/53395580336/
