The Nimrod maritime reconnaissance aircraft was derived from the Comet airliner. It originally entered RAF service in 1969 in MR1 variant to replace the Avro Shackleton. From 1979 35 aircraft were upgraded to the improved MR2 standard. Nimrod continued in service until 2010 when its successor, the MRA4 was cancelled.

Small numbers of Me 262 fighters and fighter bombers were used operationally by the Luftwaffe from mid 1944. The Me262 was the only jet fighter to see air-to-air combat in World War Two and its appearance was a great shock to the Allies. Allied pilots found the Me 262 a formidable opponent with a greatly superior speed. Special tactics were adopted to meet the new threat. Allied fighter aircraft would patrol above known Me 262 bases. They would dive down on Me 262s when they were at their most vulnerable: during take off and landing procedures.

The RAF’s lack of an aircraft with sufficient range to be deployed in the Pacific led the Air Ministry to suggest that AV Roe Limited design an enlarged Lancaster to meet the requirement. The resulting Lincoln first flew in June 1944. However, the need to maintain supplies of Lancasters delayed production until 1945; the first production Lincolns reaching No.57 Squadron in August. Lincolns were intended to join the Tiger Force in the bombing of Japan but the war ended before they were needed.
