On our recent road trip to eastern Washington we came across this abandoned homestead tucked in a little coulee on the north side of the Columbia River.
The day before we had been on the south side of the river photographing another abandoned house. My companion looked north across the river and saw another HUGE abandoned house sitting on the edge of the bluff. I gave it a look and decided it must be a house also and that it needed to be found.
We got our bearings and set out the following morning to find this amazing house, with thoughts of glory and fame for having found this abandoned structure i had never seen photos of. We stopped at various places taking pictures of other houses, slowly making our way to the area of the magnificent HUGE house of our dreams.
Driving along a dirt road near where the HUGE house had to be, we spotted this little jewel sitting forlornly in this field of flowers and tall grass. We were just slightly trespassing so there was an urgency to get in and get out. But we knew, just knew, that the HUGE house of our dreams was sitting on the bluff just out of sight behind this house, far out on the bluff overlooking the Columbia River.
We decided that i would go in search of the house while Karen returned to the truck and drive off and come back in an hour to pick me up, so as to avoid getting caught trespassing. After verifying its location we would both return to photograph it.
I bounded off across the tall grass toward the river in a hurry. i arrived about 15 minutes later, excitedly anticipating seeing the HUGE house on the bluff. Nothing! I hiked downstream and up to the top of a bluff for a higher vantage point. Nothing. In either direction there was no house. Beautiful landscape (that i will trespass on in the future for photos!), flowers, rolling hills, tall grass, stark basalt rock. but no HUGE homestead.
Chasing a mirage - we later determined that the HUGE house we searched for was a HUGE glacial erratic that had been deposited thousands of years before when the last glaciers receded from the Waterville Plateau.
Everyday is an adventure. Oh what fun!
