Aki and I looking at some of the tools and the order in which we would use them for a spacewalk 👨🚀 Actually NASA thought of the first question in advance, the lid is see-through so we can look at the tools before opening it. Because once you open it... everything floats away! This is why everything is attached to each other and things get complicated. Think it looks difficult here, wait until you are in space! This is why we (well mission control mainly) think of everything and practice. On a spacewalk even the order at which you take a tool is considered and practiced. This training saw us being very attentive followed by intense discussion, lots of hands-on, but I think we got it in the end 👌

Il ne suffit pas d'avoir une combinaison spatiale pour sortir dans l'espace : il faut aussi savoir quoi faire. Ce qui est compliqué lors d'une sortie extravéhiculaire, c’est que tous vos outils doivent être attachés pour ne pas s’envoler 👨🚀 Le moindre équipement perdu peut faire rater la sortie, sans compter qu’après avoir dérivé un peu, le moindre objet peut devenir un projectile 💥 Aki et moi sommes en train de les examiner pour déterminer l’ordre dans lequel nous devrons les utiliser. Plus facile à dire qu’à faire, et c’est encore plus compliqué dans l’espace ! C’est pour ça qu’on répète chaque geste et qu’on s’entraîne inlassablement. La NASA et les ingénieurs qui nous accompagnent ont pensé à tout. Le couvercle de la boite est transparent, tous les outils sont attachés dans un ordre précis et on s’exerce minutieusement. Cette formation nous a demandé beaucoup d’attention et de travaux pratiques, mais je pense qu’on est fin prêt 👌

Très heureux de l'annonce de Josef Aschbacher: je devrais devenir le 4e commandant européen de la Station spatiale internationale, à la fin de ma mission. Je suis fier de recevoir cet honneur ! Si tout se passe comme prévu, je serai le premier commandant français de l’ISS, après les astronautes de l’ESA Frank De Winne, Alexander Gerst et Luca Parmitano. Le commandant de la Station est en quelque sorte le capitaine du vaisseau. Bien sûr, la majorité des décisions sont prises par le Centre de contrôle en collaboration avec l’équipage, mais le commandant est la voix des astronautes en orbite. Et s’il faut faire des choix rapidement (en cas d’urgence par exemple), c’est aussi le rôle du commandant.
The ESA Director General announced during today's Mission Alpha briefing: I shall become the fourth European commander of the Space Station at the end of the mission. Honoured to be chosen for this role! If it happens, I will be the first French commander of the Space Station, following from the ESA astronauts Frank De Winne, Alexander Gerst and Luca Parmitano, and this is thanks to the great work of ESA and CNES and a recognition of that work from the international partners for which I benefit from. The role of Space Station commander is like a captain on a ship, the highest in command. Of course lots of decisions are made by mission control in collaboration with the astronauts, but the commander is the voice of the astronauts in orbit, and quick decisions in case of emergencies are taken by the commander.
