The Expedition 50-51 crew arrives at the launch site in Baikonur, Kazakhstan Nov. 1 after a flight from their training base in Star City, Russia. From left to right are Peggy Whitson of NASA, Oleg Novitskiy of the Russian Federal Space Agency (Roscosmos) and Thomas Pesquet of the European Space Agency. The three crewmembers will launch Nov. 18, Baikonur time, on the Soyuz MS-03 spacecraft for a six-month mission on the International Space Station.

Six astronauts, four flags. Raising our country's flags is another tradition we have before flying in the Soyuz spacecraft. The first French astronaut to raise the flag at Baikonur was Jean-Loup Chrétien, the last was Claudie Haigneré. The last French astronaut in space was Léopold Eyharts but he flew with the Space Shuttle from the USA. ESA astronaut Paolo Nespoli who is Italian and part of our backup crew is raising the flag of Kazakhstan on the left where Baikonur cosmodrome is located. Oleg Novitsky and Fyodor Yurchikhin are raising the Russian flag with NASA Astronaut Peggy Whitson and Jack Fischer taking duties for USA.
