The original photograph was of the Eiffel Tower, Paris during a recent visit. Here I took a shot of the Tour Eiffel through the glass exterior of Paris's new flagship museum "Musee du Quai Branly".

The Eiffel Tower is considered a "shrine" to Mordernism - the major Western art/cultural movement of the 20th Century. The Musee du Quai Branly is, however, quintessentially Post Modern. Quai Branly allows us to access the traditional art and craft of four continents, bringing fascinating "primitive" art to light, within an excellent Post Modern setting.

In this photo montage/manipulation I tried to express the central elements of Postmodernity. For example; anxiety and uncertainty, reflection on art, thought and culture post-Renaissance (mainly) and Pre-Renaissance, and the inability to classify the arts into groups, such as "popular" "high" "folk" and a merging of adverising/marketing and "serious" art.

I also paid homage to the vital importance of architecture to Paris's rich culture. The French still value the arts, culture and intellectuality in an age where culture and thought are in constant flux.

More photos from Musee de Quai Branly to come!

In this photograph I have overlayed a picture of the Bullring, Birmingham, UK with the remains of a Roman building, taken at Foro Romano in Rome, Italy. The Bullring, Birmingham was the height of 70's kitsch untill its recent redevelopment, approximately 10 year ago. Birmingham is now fashionable again, even though it retains aspects of its former landscape, for example the apalling Spaghetti Junction and the Rotunda which can be seen to the left of this picture.

It is impossible to talk about reason today without a hint of irony, or wry humour. The achievements of a bias towards reason, measurement, objectivity and materiality have resulted in 2 World wars, nuclear weopons, dissolute societies and post modern anxiety. The Romans borrowed heavily from the Greeks, who we in the West have also been influenced by in large doses. History, indeed, repeats its self and I have tried to convey this concept in this picture. Today, there is a feeling of "fin de siecle" manifesting in a considerable, Western empathy with irrationality, intuition and immateriality or the intangible, that points to a burgeoning intellectual and cultural holism. This will replace Postmodernity in a multicultural and global arena.
