I certainly hope this dear old lady is ; be it some sort of care home were she's being taken proper care of, or maybe even a certain 'elsewhere'.

I've not seen her shuffling around, searching the rubbish bins of Southport for a very long time now. She wasn't homeless but was very poor - and very proud. Too proud in fact to seek all the state help she was entitled to.

I sat on a bench chatting to her in town one day, and what a sad story she told me
l.
She was born in Germany just before WW2 began and left there with her parents right after the war ended. They were never Nazis and feared Hitler's henchmen as much as anyone else did.

She told me of the terrible times she went through as a young schoolgirl. Times when those like her didn't know who to trust and lived in fear of every soldier they saw ; and there certainly were plenty around in those days ; all of different nationalities and wearing different uniforms and carrying different weapons.

For a young schoolgirl of those terrible times, it's easy to understand what her (and all her young peers) main worries were -- over and above sudden violent death of course.

She lived in the countryside outside a city, so never had to shelter from the allies' continuous bombing raids, though she could clearly hear them.

At the time I chatted to her, her parents were by then long dead and she had grown up and lived all alone in England for many years. In the early days she had suffered all sorts of awful abuse here, because being German she was still considered, by the ignorant, to be 'the enemy'.

I could go on, but I'm sure you already get the picture.

As I said before, I pray she's now in a better place - of any sort at all.
