Up until 1849 and the Act of Enclosure, Llandudno was just a couple of hundred dwellings with less than 1,000 inhabitants. At that time most of the area was presented to the powerful Mostyn family, and to this day remains under their control.
From that time on, Llandudno was soon transformed into a Victorian sea-side holiday town, and with the arrival of the railway in the 1850's visitors arrived in their droves. A new pier was constructed in 1875 (extended in 1884), followed by the Grand Hotel - opened in 1902, and all the sea front accommodation essential for large numbers of Victorian visitors.
