One of our local raccoon families has at least two blonde raccoons, a coloration produced by a recessive gene. I’m not sure of the relationship between these two, but the blonde raccoon was noticeably smaller than the other. The group of five raccoons stopped for a moment to check me out before slinking away under a fence. They live in the park where I shot this, and are fairly habituated to humans, owing to the large numbers of people who frequent the area. [Photographed from a respectful distance w/tele lens]

I had so much fun photographing this young family of raccoons in my friend’s garden a few years back. They’d been denning in an old boat nearby, and I happened upon them as the family scrambled around this tree in play. Raccoons, with their stripes and contrasts, are perfect subjects in black and white. And the tree functioned like a studio setting, with the kits seemingly comfortable enough to be themselves in front of the lens. [Photographed from a respectful distance w/tele lens]
