User / Ingrid Valda Taylar / River Otter Along the Trail

We were walking on a quiet stretch of trail, alongside a waterfowl pond when we noticed a family of river otters swimming beside us. I shot this short clip as one of the otters paused to check us out. [Filmed from a distance w/tele lens.]

The chirping you hear is a typical otter sound, but I wasn’t sure if it signified any distress, or if it was a just playful call. I looked into it some, and asked a fellow photographer who’s photographed this species more often than I have. The consensus seems to be that it’s not necessarily an alarm sound.

If anyone knows differently, please do comment. I don’t often encounter river otters, so my understanding of their behavior and communication is still a work in progress.
