This was the view from my yard at 5 AM. Considering my yard is only a mile from our little rural town and surrounded by ambient light pollution from neighboring houses, it compels me to take a drive up to the Blue Ridge Parkway and get some even better frames of our galaxy.

The conditions are prime right now with the cool nights we've been having but the moon is preventing optimal shooting conditions until after 4 AM. I figure in two weeks, when it's closer to a new moon, I'll have some of my best opportunities of the year.

Sometimes things just come together like planned. I've been itching to get this shot for a long time now and I feel a weight lifted from my shoulders.

The video needs some work but it looks better on vimeo than on flickr.

Even Closer

Funny how one spark out of probably a thousand can ruin a shot.

One 17 minute photo shot at two locations. The good old double lens cap trick.

Canon t1i, ISO 100, f/8, Rokinon 14mm lens. I took 4 minutes to gel the trees then capped my lens. From there, I carried my camera to the pond, removed the lens cap, walked to the other side of the pond and carried on in my usual tacky mask antics. After 17 minutes, I closed the shutter and the single exposure popped up on my display. That moment where you get to see the fruits of your labor is what it's all about.

My shot tonight was inspired by the photo below captured by R Digi. Of course my double had to be all tackyfied and was a different perspective of the woods but the inspiration of his amazing photo is what drove me out into the cold night with my gear and ideas and that's what matters most.

In fact, that is one of the many amazing facets of our art form. We push each other to try and reach new levels of magic. While we may or may not imitate, we keep the LP train chugging along by sharing our imaginations and motivating each other along the way.

I didn't get the full reflection as this was shot with my nikkor 50mm 1.4 but it's all good. Tackyman is down whatever the frame.
