As its common name implies, the blue morpho butterflies wings are bright blue edged with black. Their vivid iridescent blue colouring is a result of the microscopic scales on the backs of their wings, which reflect the light. The underside of this butterflies wings are a dull brown colour with many eyespots which providing camouflage against predators when its wings are closed.

Oranjestad is the capital of Aruba it is a flat riverless island just a short distance north of the Venezuelan Peninsula Paraguana. Aruba’s tropical climate is moderated by constant trade winds from the Atlantic Ocean, I must admit with the temperature ranging from 28C to 32C the wind helped enormously and made the temperature more comfortable, a lovely and very enjoyable holiday which was long awaited.

This is a common plant which grows in the hedgerows and woodlands, Wood Avens is also known as ‘Herb Bennet’. It is quite a small flower which quickly droops, the yellow flowers appear on slender stems from May to August and are a good source of nectar. Wood Avens is also a food plant of the caterpillars of the Grizzled Skipper Butterfly.

Oleander grows between 2 and 6m tall with erect stems that splay outwards as they mature, the flowers are in clusters at the end of each branch, some of the varieties are scented. The plants are very poisonous but some invertebrates are known to be unaffected by the oleander toxins and feed on the plants. The flowers require insect visits to set seed and seem to be pollinated through a deception mechanism. The showy corolla acts as a potent advertisement to attract pollinators from a distance, but the flowers are nectarless and offer no reward to their visitors. They therefore receive very few visits, as typical of many rewardless flower species. All parts of the oleander are very poisonous.

Both the upper and lower wings are bright white, with some small light brown markings. There is a row of small eyespots on the underside of the hind-wings. Photograph taken at ‘The Butterfly Farm’ in Aruba.
