Another view of the Great Salt Lake and Antelope Island. This was taken on the causeway, which is a 7.5 mile road connecting the island to Davis County, Utah. We found this area that wasn't covered completely in snow, and was showing the thin layer of ice covering the salt water.

Some interesting info about the Great Salt Lake:
- The two halves of the lake have great differences in their salinity levels. This causes major color differences between the two halves. (See the Wikipedia satellite photo.)
- The salinity level of the lake ranges between 5% to 27%. The ocean is 3.5%.
I've been experimenting with vertoramas over the past couple of days. I love them. The first one I ever attempted was on this outing. Hopefully that's up next.

My first ever vertorama attempt. Partial failure since this consists only of two three-exposure HDRs. The left pane failed since I wasn't using aperture priority. I'll learn. Also not quite what I wanted as a final result since my tripod moved a bit. Blending in some of the snow features became an issue.
* Caution: Blog entry ahead. Since this is on Flickr, should it be called a Flog? *
First off, let me admit something. I have, of course, seen some amazing work on Flickr over the past three months. During that time I've simply been trying to figure out photography again. I've learned from some of the greatest on Flickr, whether it was just by viewing your shots or through messages I've received with instruction and tips. You guys are wonderful. Come to Utah. I'll buy you lunch. Dinner would seem like a date, and I'm taken. :)
So...during my Flickr time I also have seen "vertorama" stuff from a few people. The problem is that I didn't pay attention, exactly, to what that word meant. It seemed way too advanced for me to even consider. If I'd stopped to think about it, the word somehow has something in common with panorama, right? This is my brain. This is my brain on photography. Cut me some slack though. At one point I did check Wikipedia, but it wanted to tell me about "Vertebrata" which I'm guessing isn't a photography term.
Then I was out this night and it hit me. It all made sense. So I took a couple, and then a few more the next day. The processing takes longer, of course, than a single shot, but it's worth it to me. These give me the full picture. I know I'm coming late to the party, but who cares? I love it and will be posting some of these over the next few days. They make me smile. Hopefully they'll do something to you as well.
Vertorama HDR Info
(This image has a total of six exposures.)
- Shot two sets, each with three exposures. (Bracketing set to 3F with 2.0 EV.)
- Each set of three exposures tonemapped using Photomatix. HDR generated using default detail enhancer settings.
- Two resulting HDRs stitched using Photoshop CS2, with manual alignment adjustments, to create a single image.
- Lightroom 2 used to adjust colors and black levels on single image.

Flickr Explore: Feb 16, 2009 - Thanks everyone!
Those are my gloves. They are very warm and I love them. They were just sitting underneath the tripod and I figured they'd look better in the shot.
This was taken on Antelope Island, looking out to White Rock Bay. Buffalo Point is to your right. Stansbury Island is to your left.
It was absolutely peaceful here. My footprints, and the various paw prints (see bottom-right), were the only signs of life in the snow.

Another 17 inches of snow fell today, so I'm sure this place would look a lot different
now. The animal tracks visible here were actually out on the ice. Just another way for the critter to stay safe. I'm not sure what made these tracks, but I saw a fox on my way out. He saw me too, but he didn't seem as interested in me as I was in him.
This is an HDR vertorama, similar to the one uploaded a couple of days ago. This the Great Salt Lake, taken on Antelope Island, looking out to White Rock Bay.
Now back to the b&w...

Out of the archive. I'm guessing I never posted this one because it's so processed. Nothing like HPT (Highly Processed Tuesday) to take care of that.
I've said this before. I'll say it again. Antelope Island during this time of year is wonderful. The peace and the quiet that exists here is nearly overwhelming. You can listen to the peace here:

This was taken last month on Antelope Island, looking west across Bridger Bay, which is part of The Great Salt Lake. The structure you see is a shelter for a picnic table, which won't be used for a few months more.
This is an HDR vertorama. Three exposures up and three exposures down.
I hope you didn't give up and think I was never going to upload a sunset ever again. :)
