Yellow-crowned Night Herons will stand perfectly still for minutes and minutes on end in shallow water on Horsepen Bayou, waiting with unlimited patience for a blue crab to wander within striking distance of their dagger beak. Luckily for the photographer without unlimited patience, these birds are so common on the bayou in spring and summer that at any given moment there is a fair chance of finding one in sight in the process of dispatching its prey.
