Over the summer of 2022 contractors were surprised to discover a mosaic beneath the render on Borough High Street next to London Bridge station, which turned out to be the work of celebrated mosaicist Jesse Rust.
It marked the entrance to an Express Dairy, a place that received fresh milk delivered from the countryside, considered superior to milk produced by London cows.
The mosaic pieces, known as tesserae, may have come from Venice & the mosaic might the last surviving Express Dairy signage in the UK.
The mosaic celebrates the Express Dairy parlour, with smoking rooms & Ladies rooms, where Londoners would gather to drink or purchase fresh milk.

A entrance floor mosaic on Kingsland High Street for F.Cooke. The signage on this shop said they were live eel importers.
Cookes' ran a number of pie, mash & eel shops over the last century & a half, but at present i believe only one shop remains on Hoxton Street, with a shop in Shepherds Bush closing 4 years ago & on Broadway Market very recently.
