Best Position #490

A view of midtown Atlanta morning rush hour on the 75/85 connector.

This was taken from the rear parking lot deck of The Varsity, looking North toward Atlantic Station. In this scene you can see: Atlantic Station including the Wells Fargo and BB&T Buildings and The Atlantic Condominium Tower, the 10th Street overpass and the Georgia Tech billboard and of course, the headlight and taillight trails of the traffic streaming through midtown Atlanta.

Backyard Shots field trip to Historic Oakland Cemetery
Atlanta, Georgia USA
Sunday, July 31,2011

Some pictures from my field trip to the Historic Oakland Cemetery in Atlanta with the Backyard Shots group led by David Akoubian.

Historic Oakland Cemetery

Originally called the Atlanta Graveyard, the initial plot of land was purchased by the City of Atlanta in 1850. Oakland is located to the southeast of downtown Atlanta in an area that was rural farmland at the time. Large US cities of the 19th century typically had crowded, unattractive cemeteries centered in the urban areas. Oakland is an early example of the "rural garden cemetery", designed in a park-like setting landscaped with walking paths and beautiful shady areas to sit and relax.

The cemetery expanded rapidly during and just after the Civil War to accommodate the Union and Confederate soldiers who died during the Battle of Atlanta as well as other action in the area. Many stones marking the dead of the War Between the States dot the grounds and there is also a memorial called the "Lion of Atlanta" which commemorates 3,000 unknown Confederate soldiers.

Oakland Cemetery was added to the National Register of Historic Places (#76000627) in 1976.

Details of the image

This view was taken from the Bell Tower Ridge area of the cemetery which is the second highest elevation (1070 feet above sea level) in the city of Atlanta.

In the foreground:
- The angel with a cross is the top of the Boynton family memorial
- The building in the right corner is the Kiser family mausoleum

In the background you can see:
- King Memorial MARTA Station
- 191 Peachtree Tower (4th tallest building in Atlanta)
- Westin Peachtree Plaza (5th tallest building in Atlanta)
- Georgia Pacific Building (6th tallest building in Atlanta)

Maya Ruins of TULUM
Yucatan Peninsula, Quintana Roo, Mexico

Detail of the carved image of CHAAC the Maya Rain God.

With his lightning axe, Chaac strikes the clouds and produces thunder and rain.

The Temple of the Frescoes is one of the most famous of the buildings of the Tulum ruins. Used as a solar observatory, the stucco interior was painted with distinctly Maya images, some of which are still visible today. The 13th century paintings featured the Maya deities of Chaac (the rain god) and Ixchel (the goddess of weaving, women, the moon and medicine). Tourists can no longer view the frescoes and with good reason. These priceless pieces of history were vandalized with graffiti in the past!

Although, the structures present at Tulum are less impressive than those of other sites in the Yucatan such as Chichen Itza, the ocean-front location makes this one of the most beautiful. The site is also unique among Maya cities in the fortress-style walls that surround it (only 1 other Maya city is known to have been built with walls) as well as the coastal location.

Maya Ruins of TULUM
Yucatan Peninsula, Quintana Roo, Mexico

This is a view out onto the Caribbean from the base of El Castillo, the main temple of the Tulum complex. From here you can see the azure waters and also admire the intricate stonework of the ancient building.

Tulum's ocean-front setting and easy access from the Cancun and Cozumel resort areas has made it one of Mexico's most popular Maya attractions.

See the rest of my shots in this set: Georgia Aquarium

The Georgia Aquarium's male beluga whale NICO comes in for a closer look.

Beluga whale
(Delphinapterus leucas)

The beluga whale is found in the arctic and sub-arctic regions of the world including Russia, Alaska, Canada, Norway, Greenland and other northern European countries. It is typically found in shallow waters to depths of 3,000 feet. It feeds on a wide variety of fish, often suction feeding animals off the ocean bottom such as crabs, clams and worms. It is an opportunistic feeder known to prey on about 100 different kinds of primarily bottom-dwelling animals.
