The baboon is to show the animals the animals they used to have at the Tower of London in the past. The animals are part of the Royal Beasts exhibition. The sculptures are by artist Kendra Haste.
King John Established the collection in the early 12th century. The Royal Menagerie got to over 300 animals with 60 different species. Royalty were normally given the animals as regal gifts. This resulted in a vast variety of exotic creatures including lions, tigers, leopards, elephants, and various apes. A polar bear, given by the king of Norway in 1251, was chained up near Traitors' Gate. They allowed the bears chain to be long enough to allow it to eat by catching fish from the Thames.
