To my surprise, while looking for hawks to photograph on the Weaver Ranch, the owner of the ranch and I came upon an old deer blind that was occupied by this barn owl. The owl allowed me to take about five pictures before disappearing in the typical Tamaulipan scrub brush of South Texas.

Para mi sorpresa, mientras buscaba gavilanes de que pudiera sacar fotos, me topé con esta lechuza de campanario que vivía en esta escondida vieja para venados. La lechuza me permitió unas cinco fotos antes de que se desapareciera en los matorrales típicos del sur de Texas.

Last week while jogging during my son's football practice, I noticed this great horned owl. Since the first day I saw it I have been trying to get a decent picture including the first day I saw it on my run. Anyhow, today I went to where it is and as luck would have it, it allowed two shots before flying away. After getting home I noticed that the "it" is a she. She is nesting in a huge trunk cavity that is part of an enormous sycamore tree. If you look closely in the lower right corner, you will see two heads. Those are her chicks. I am going to continue to monitor this site so I can take more pics, hopefully of the chicks as they fledge.

La semana pasada mientras corría esperando a que terminara la práctica de fútbol americano de mi hijo, me fijé en un búho cornudo que se posaba en un sicomoro enorme. Desde aquel día he tratado de lograr una foto de él sin éxito. Sin embargo, hoy fui a verlo de nuevo y lo encontré en la cavidad que usa como nido. Tuve la suerte de lograr dos fotos antes de que se fuera volando. Cuando regresé a casa, supe que este búho cornudo es una hembra y tiene polluelos en el nido. Mira el rincón derecho de abajo y verás dos cabecitas. Son sus polluelos. Voy a continuar monitoreando el nido para que pueda, ojalá, tomar fotos de los polluelos mientras se empluman.
