Listening to an oldies radio station today, and this song came on. I realized that I could sing most of the lyrics, but have really never understood what they mean. The debate rages on; many think it's about heroin, others think it's about finding meaning in solitude... It made me think of Death Valley, and the writer actually spent time in the high desert near here at Vandenberg AFB during his childhood.

On the first part of the journey
