Excerpt from www.discoverhongkong.com: Che Kung was a military commander of the Southern Song dynasty 南宋 (1127–1279) whose advantageous power for suppressing uprisings and plagues made him a household name. In popular folklore, it’s said that Che Kung escorted the Song dynasty’s last emperor on his escape to Sai Kung in what is now called the New Territories. His achievements led to him eventually becoming revered as a god.

This temple which honours Che Kung is located at Ho Chung in Sai Kung, and was built by the local community to serve the half-dozen villages in the Ho Chung valley. With feng shui woods located behind it, a river immediately in front, and well-preserved traditional design and architecture within it, it’s become one of the most auspicious traditional buildings in the New Territories.

Excerpt from www.catholicheritage.org.hk:

St. Joseph’s Church was established by Rev. Timoleon Raimondi, the last prefect and the First Vicar Apostolic. The construction of the church was attributed to the dedication and efforts of many parties, including the Hong Kong Government, local Christian communities as well as the Jewish agencies. Officiated and blessed on 20.11.1872, it represented one of the only three remaining Catholic churches at that time, the other two being the Immaculate Conception Church at Wellington Street and the St. Francis Church in Wanchai.

However, this Church was completely swiped off by a severe typhoon in September 1874. The redeveloped building was completed in 1876. Yet it was not until 25.1.1949 it was erected as the St Joseph Parish.

Given its prime location in Central district and well served by major road network, as well as in close proximity to the Botanical Garden and key government administration offices, St Joseph Church enjoys a strategic geographical location second to none. Hence it becomes a popular venue for prayer and worship for tourists and visitors. The church offers ten masses on every Sunday and three daily masses, making it perhaps the busiest Catholic Church in Hong Kong.
