Cathedral of Our Lady of Kazan was designed by architect Andrey Voronikhin and took from 1801-1811 to build. It features a 364 feet long curved colonnade, a 262 feet high dome, and pink Finnish granite columns with bronze capitals and bases. The cathedral is named after the miracle working icon of Our Lady of Kazan which is kept inside the cathedral.

The Academy of Science was founded in 1724, and is now housed in a building constructed between 1783 and 1785 by Giacomo Quarenghi. Kunstkammer was built between 1718 and 1734 by Georg Mattamoviy, and used to house Peter the Great's entire collection of 2,000 anatomical preparations by Frederik Ruysch. It is now the Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography.

Inside the fortress is the Cathedral of Sts. Peter and Paul, designed by Domenico Trezzini in 1712, and completed in 1733. The gilded needle spire is 400 feet tall.
