The three domes in the administrative building houses 15-cm, 50-cm, and 60-cm telescopes. In 1987, its station in Chile witnessed the first supernova. It also has Canada's largest optical telescope with 1.88-metre telescope. Built in 1935, and in 1972, discovered Cygnus X-1, the first black hole ever identified, by Charles Thomas Bolton, one of the observatory’s astronomers.

It was completed in 1881as Richmond Hill Methodist Church. In 1925, the then St. John's United Church joined with St. Paul's United Church to become the Richmond Hill United Church.

Being the oldest church in York County, it opened for service in May 1881. The church was built with buff bricks with squared-off steeple.

The uniqueness of St. Mary's Anglican Church is that the first actual church building, erected in 1872, is still standing, and is incorporated into the present church complex as a chapel.
