Cobalt is known as the Silver Capital of Canada, and is also claimed to be Ontario's most historic town. Silver was discovered in 1908, and the town boasted a population of 20,000 at one point, with the first electric car system north of Toronto, and its own stock exchange. Stock market crash in 1929 spelled the end of the silver rush.
