It is a national shrine in honour of the eight Martyrs of the 17th century, who almost 400 years ago planted the roots of Christianity in the Huronia region of Ontario. The church is dedicated to St. Joseph, the patron of the Martyrs and Upper Canada, and was built in 1925-26, with stones from Longford, Ontario County.

The Lemoyne was built in 1926 and was the biggest bulk carrier on the Great Lakes until the 1950s. The ship was 663 feet in length, 70 feet wide and 73 feet in depth.
