The legend has it that a giant called Omett was turned into the rock pillar to guard the grave site of Naomi, the daughter of Nanabijou, the Spirit of Deep Sea Water, when the rocks from the mountain Omett was trying to move accidentally killed Naomi.

The canyon is 150 meters wide and 100 meters deep. The diabase was formed 1,142 million years ago, when magna rose to the surface, resulting in pillar-like rock formation that lined the walls of the canyon.
