Description of the District
The Cross-Melville Heritage Conservation District is bounded by Sydenham, Melville, Cross and Victoria Streets in the former Town of Dundas, now the City of Hamilton. The district consists of 49 properties. These properties are predominantly single family dwellings with the exception of three churches.

Cultural Heritage Value of the District
According to the Cross-Melville Heritage Conservation District Study - Background Report the cultural heritage value of the district lies in its historical and associative value, design or physical value as well as the contextual value. The Background Report concludes:

“The Cross-Melville area constitutes a superb collection of buildings with particularly fine architectural attributes. Tree planted along the streets enhance the surroundings of individual buildings and provide expansive canopies over adjacent streets. Developed in the 1840s and 1850s as the first exclusively residential area distinct from the commercial and industrial locales of Dundas, this neighbourhood is associated with numerous prominent citizens, mayors and councillors, including George Rolph, William Notman, Alexis Begue and the Grafton family”.

Excerpt from the poster:

In 1841, Moses Weaver built his Weaver’s Tavern at this address. It was named the Red Lion Hotel in 1848, and in 1868 it was known as the Terrapin Saloon.

The original wood frame building was completely destroyed by fire on September 30, 1871, but was rebuilt out of brick the next year by William Dodd, who renamed it the Red Lion Hotel. The building was a tavern until 1922, known by various names throughout the years, such as the Queen’s Hotel, the Osborne House and the Wentworth Inn.

From 1922 the building housed various offices and shops until 1940, when Susan and Du Wong came to Dundas with ambitious plans to open a modern, popular restaurant, and the ‘DeLuxe Diner’ was born and became a popular spot for many years.

The old DeLuxe Diner remained closed for business since 1979 – until November of 2009, when the old diner was resurrected as the Bangkok Spoon DeLuxe!

Excerpt from dundasheritage.com:

1 Victoria Street first showed up on the tax rolls in 1882. It was built by a local businessman named Joseph Bowman. The house is a Classical Revival style with a medium pitched gable roof. It has a large central gable. The home also has a touch of Gothic in its design with the pointed arched windows. The house is plain in appearance but is broken up by the decorative trim along the gable and the bay windows.
