Mando Matsuri is a festival that has been celebrated for more than 200 years by Kariya citizens.
"Mando" are colourful giant paper lanterns with bamboo frames. Some of the Mando are more than four metres tall and represent historic Japanese warriors.
In the festival, people from seven wards of the city gather and dance holding the Mandos for the God of the Akiba Shrine to pray for rain.
The scene, in which giant colourful Mando are floating in the summer evening, is truly magnificent and makes the festival one of the most unique in the world.
The photomosaic, a combination of 6,750 pictures, celebrates the past exchanges between Kariya and Mississauga and has been created to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the twinning our cities.
