In partnership with the Ontario Government, the Archives of Ontario is the largest provincial archives in Canada, with a collection valued at more than $400 million. Its main mission is to preserve the documentary history of the province and acts as a source of research for the police, courts, historians and genealogists.

Opened in September of 2004 and can accommodate approximately 430 undergraduate students, with two-bedroom suites with shared kitchen and bathroom. It also has a ground floor common room with laundry facilities, lounge furniture, TV, and landscaped courtyard outside. The building is also environmentally friendly with a 1,000 square metre planted roof which will increase thermal insulation and stores ground water, and therefore reducing the need for sewers. It also features the "in-slab radiant heating and cooling" which uses less energy and provides more comfort than conventional forced-air or electric heaters.

Accolade East houses the Department of Music and the Department of Dance, and features exhibition and performing arts facilities in addition to classrooms and a computer lab serving the University. The Art Gallery of York University has also moved into this location.

It was renamed to the present name on November 24, 2008 in honour of Avie Bennett who served two terms as chancellor of York University from 1998 to 2004.
