It is also known as Olgas, but the aboriginal name of Kata Tjuta is being used. Kata Tjua, meaning Place of Many Heads, is a formation of 36 domes, and is thought to have once been a single rock even bigger than Uluru (Ayers Rock), and higher than the nowadays Himalayas. It is made of sedimentary rock called conglomerate which is a mixture of gravel, pebbles, and boulders cemented together by sand and mud. It contains many minerals including basalt and granite. Kata Tjuta occupies an area of 30 square kilometres, and was formed 500 to 750 million years ago. Mt. Olga is the highest now at 546 metres above ground level, or 1,069 metres above sea level. Kata Tjuta was discovered by a German explorer and named it Olga after a Swedish princess.
