It was originally built in the early years of the Northern Wei Dynasty (386-534), and covers an area of 17,400 square metres of which 3,711 square metres are occupied by buildings. It is most famous for its collectiion of 2,050 coloured statues, in addition to the Tang Scholar Tree, Song Dynasty Stele, Ming Dynasty Clock, and the painted frescoes on the walls. It is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997.
