Excerpt from Wikipedia:

The modern double helix staircase, also in the Pio-Clementine Museum, and commonly referred to as the "Bramante Staircase", was designed by Giuseppe Momo in 1932 and was inspired by the original Bramante Staircase. This staircase, like the original, is a double helix, having two staircases allowing people to ascend without meeting people descending; as with the original the main purpose being to allow uninterrupted traffic in each direction. It encircles the outer wall of a stairwell of approximately fifteen meters wide and with a clear space at the centre. The balustrade around the ramp is of ornately worked metal. A canopy located above provides the necessary light to illuminate the stairs. The staircase is located at the end of the museum visit and all visitors leave by this route.

Excerpt from the plaque:

The Stefaneschi Triptych carries the name of Cardinal Jacopo Caetani degli Stefaneschi, who commissioned the work as an altarpiece for the high altar in the old basilica of St. Peter. It is painted on both sides so it could be seen at the same time by priests and people on both sides of a free-standing altar. On the back side, the centre panel shows Christ in majesty flanked by angels and Cardinal Stefaneschi, and the side panels show the crucifixion of St. Peter and the Beheading of St. Paul; the predella panels depict the Virgin and Child in majesty between angels and the twelve Apostles. On the front side, the centre panel shows St. Peter in majesty between two angels and, at his feet, the kneeling figure of Cardinal Stefaneschi who is offering a model of the triptych. Behind him St. George stands ready to intercede for him, and opposite there is a kneeling bishop-saint in the act of offering St. Peter a book, perhaps Pope Celestine V. The front side panels show St. James and St. Paul on the left and St. John Evangelist and St. Andrew on the right. Only one of the predella panels survives and this shows three saints. The piece was produced by Giotto with the help of his workshop around 1320-1325.
